Kapama Private Reserve – Greater Kruger National Park
Visiting the African wild is always a thrill, but my recent trip to Jabulani Safari Lodge in the Greater Kruger National Park was nothing short of magical.
Nestled within the private Kapama Reserve, Jabulani isn’t just any luxury safari lodge – it’s home to a remarkable herd of orphaned elephants, rescued from reserves across Southern Africa. One of these gentle giants is even a global icon – the elephant featured on the Amarula bottle. But what truly sets Jabulani apart is the unforgettable elephant engagement experience it offers.
After a short flight from Cape Town to Hoedspruit, our guide Nathan greeted us at the airport in his game drive vehicle. The 30-minute drive to the lodge flew by as we chatted and enjoyed the landscape. Before long, we arrived at the entrance of the five-star Jabulani Safari Lodge, where warm smiles, cool towels, and refreshing drinks awaited us.
The excitement kicked in immediately when I learned that our elephant engagement experience was scheduled for that very afternoon – no waiting required!
But first, it was time to freshen up. Room reveals are one of my favourite parts of any luxury stay, and Jabulani did not disappoint. The suite was a sensory delight, blending earthy tones and textures with luxurious details. One standout feature was the bathroom faucets, designed from integrated tree branches – a thoughtful nod to nature and immersion.
With bags unpacked and cameras ready, we set off for the long-awaited elephant experience.
Following a short briefing from one of the handlers, we were introduced to three members of the herd, one by one. The interaction began with feeding – offering nutritional pellets by hand or tossing them directly into their open mouths as they raised their trunks. Watching their dexterity up close was incredible. I couldn’t resist snapping a few photos before heading off for our evening game drive.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, we sipped sundowners by a waterhole while the elephants ambled past, silhouetted against the blazing orange sky – a perfect ending to an extraordinary day.
The next two days were packed with five exhilarating game drives, all expertly guided by Nathan. His deep knowledge of the bush enriched every sighting, from lion prides to elusive leopards. No matter how often I visit, the African bush always has something new to reveal.
During our short stay, we were fortunate to witness the Big Five and enjoy multiple close encounters with the elephants.
Reflecting on the experience, I can’t help but draw comparisons to Giraffe Manor in Kenya, where intimate giraffe interactions mirror the connection with Jabulani’s elephants.
Now, let’s talk food. Chef Ryan, a decade-long fixture at the lodge, crafted meals that were nothing short of culinary wizardry. From bush snacks to elegant dinners, every dish was outstanding. My only “complaint”? The portions were enormous! Even a simple snack platter felt more like a feast.
If you adore elephants, luxury, and incredible cuisine, Jabulani Safari Lodge is a must-visit. I wholeheartedly recommend staying for at least three nights – I made the mistake of only booking two! Every aspect, from the accommodations and safaris to the exceptional staff and unique elephant encounters, makes Jabulani a standout in the Kapama Reserve.
Jabulani Safari Lodge has left an indelible mark on my heart, and I can’t wait to return. To our elephant-loving guests, this experience is truly one for the books!
